You own your website.
Here's what that actually means.
Most "website builders" don't sell you a website. They rent you one. There's a real difference, and it matters when you stop paying — or want to leave.
When you build your business website on Wix, Squarespace, Shopify, GoDaddy or Readdy, you're not buying a website. You're renting time on their platform. That distinction is invisible at signup — and very visible the day you try to leave.
What "rented" actually means
Stop paying your monthly Wix bill, your site goes dark within 30 days. The pages you wrote, the photos you uploaded, the customer reviews — gone. Want to move to a different host? You can't take the design with you. The code is theirs. The CMS is theirs. The hosting is theirs. You can export your raw text and images, but you'll have to rebuild everything.
Want to hire a designer to redo your homepage? They can only edit within Wix's editor — limited to whatever Wix supports. Want to add a custom feature your business needs? Pay Wix for the upgraded plan. Forever.
A typical small business pays Wix or Squarespace $15–60 per month. Over five years that's $900–3,600 — for a website you never own.
What "owned" actually means at Moviio
When we build you a website at Moviio, the result is yours. Not in marketing-language terms — in literal, hand-over-the-keys terms.
-
→
The domain — registered in your name, in your account at Cloudflare or your registrar of choice. We help you set it up; you keep the login.
-
→
The website files — the source code, every image, every line of HTML, CSS and JavaScript. Hand them to any developer in 5 years and they can pick up where we left off.
-
→
Your content — copy, photos, brand visuals, all the original assets. No licence to expire, no usage cap.
-
→
Your accounts — hosting, email, Stripe, Google Business — all paid by you, to you. We never sit between you and your money.
-
→
The freedom to leave — change hosts, hire a different designer, rebuild it yourself, give the files to your nephew. Your call. We don't hold your business hostage to keep you subscribed.
The honest part
You'll still pay normal third-party costs after launch — but they're your accounts, paid to them, not to us:
- Domain renewal — about A$15 / year, paid to your registrar
- Hosting — usually free to A$10 / month on Cloudflare or Netlify, paid to them
- Email — free to A$6 / month via Cloudflare Email Routing or Google Workspace, paid to them
- Payment processing — Stripe / Square fees, paid to them per transaction
Total typical: A$15–200 / year, depending on what you actually need. Versus A$180–720 / year on Wix or Squarespace — forever, with no equity built.
Why this matters for sole traders specifically
If you're a sole trader, your website is a real business asset — like your tools, your van, your chair. You wouldn't lease your scissors. You shouldn't lease your storefront either. When you sell the business, retire, change direction, or just want to redesign — owning the work means you have options. Renting it means you start over.
